All-Day Community Kirkjas
2023 Dates:
– Yule Day, Monday, December 25th –
7 am –– 5 pm
On certain days of the year the Kirkja will be open, and the fire tended, for the community to drop in and sit, alongside others, sometimes in quiet contemplation, sometimes sharing and celebrating, perhaps with song or story…a chance to remember an old way of honoring and listening that has been nearly lost in our industrial, dissociated culture.
These days begin at 7am and end at different times so please make sure to check the schedule (above). The fire will be tended and your job is simply to show up when it’s right for you.
PLEASE - The Kirkja is located in a residential neighborhood with minimal parking. Park on Kalua Street and walk the short distance to Jib Court and The Kirkja. If you have supplies to drop off at The Kirkja, feel free to pull into the driveway, unload, and then park your car on Kalua. This will ensure that we keep our relationship with our neighbors healthy, so The Kirkja can remain open to the community for years to come!
Bring family, bring offerings to the Fire. Bring your laments and heartbreaks, your joys and celebrations. Bring a poem or a song. Bring a drum or a rattle. We often have hot drinks and small snacks available, and welcome your donations to the snack table. We also welcome your monetary donations to help keep the wood in stock. (Please do NOT bring your dogs, even if they are service dogs. We regret that we cannot have unfamiliar animals on the land.)
These all-community Kirkja days are an opportunity to remember how to take up our right-sized space in circle with each other. In other words, be attuned and attentive to what is already happening in the Kirkja upon your arrival. If there is silence, perhaps you ought to observe the silence. If there is song and conversation and you’re hungering for quiet, perhaps you make a request for the group to come to silence for a bit. We invite you to spontaneously organize with each other to create an environment that is conducive to sincere participation. And that can look like many different things. Most of all, you’re invited to come with your joy, your grief, your curiosity, your contemplation…all the ways we might feel and be, with good reason, at a time like this.
Please do read The Kirkja page for more detailed instructions on location, parking, and Kirkja respect.
